STUART — Most Martin County residents have probably seen or visited the small Captain Adams Park, located near Confusion Corner in Stuart, but may know little about the man it honors. Francis Alexandre Adams…was born in New York City on May 11, 1874. The Adams were direct descendants of the former U.S. presidents, John and John Quincy Adams. In May 1898, Adams joined the New York National Guard's 'Rainbow Division' as a gunner in the light artillery…then transferred to 14th Volunteer Infantry, Company M. He trained in Tampa, under Col. Frederick D. Grant, son of President U.S. Grant and served as Col. Grant's liaison officer. He attained the rank of Second Lt. during the Spanish-American War in Cuba, where he met Col. Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. Adams, at age 97, initiated a historical museum for Stuart artifacts in May 1972 on May 11, 1974…The city park at Confusion Corner was dedicated to Captain Adams for the exercise of good government, the small park serving as
