The oldest structure in Martin County. In 1955 the Historical Society was formed to protect the house and present it as a museum. Houses of Refuge were designated as havens for shipwrecked sailors and travelers along the sparsely populated Atlantic coastline of Florida. These houses were staffed by “keepers” who with their families led solitary lives to find, rescue and minister to those who fell victim to Florida’s treacherous reefs and shoals. In 1955 The Historical Society was formed to protect and present the house as a museum. Almost immediately as well as serving as a museum it became a nesting area for sea turtles. 8" x 10" PRINTS available $20
