The Art of Larry Stein

New Exhibition featuring The Art of Larry Stein of Boca Raton. Before there was Bob Ross there was Bill Alexander the originator of “Happy Little Trees”. In fact TV host and prolific painter Bob Ross studied under Alexander, from whom he learned his wet-on-wet technique, a method of painting rapidly using progressively thinner layers of oil paint. Larry was initially inspired by the work of Bill Alexander who hosted The Magic of Oil Painting (1974-1982), which ran on PBS in the United States and then by Bob Ross, the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, an instructional TV show that aired from 1983 to 1994 also on PBS. Like both Ross and Alexander Larry uses the wet-on-wet oil painting technique, in which the painter continues adding paint on top of still-wet paint rather than waiting a lengthy amount of time to allow each layer of paint to dry. Combining the wet painting method with the use of large one- and two-inch brushes, as well as painting knives, allows Stein to paint trees, clouds, mountains, and water in a matter of seconds. Each painting starts with simple strokes that appears as nothing more than smudges of color. As he adds more and more strokes, the blotches would transform into intricate landscapes and objects of art.
